Barack Obama was unusually open about his desire to see more technological solutions to gun safety issues – at least by the standards of American politics, especially sitting presidents. While the tone of the debate in Washington has changed markedly with Trump’s inauguration, the interest that Obama kick started in the potential for high-tech solutions to gun safety issues continues to persist.
The technologies that might one day make our firearms safer are still in their infancy. However, they continue to improve all the time. A growing number of politicians and ordinary American citizens are now calling for further research and funding so that these proposed solutions can become a reality.
The premise of a smart gun is simple; by introducing the same kind of authentication systems that we rely on to keep our smartphones secure, we can make guns that can only be fired by the registered owner. This is less secure than a fingerprint, as the transmitter can easily be stolen, but it is quicker and more reliable in an emergency situation.
